SSIMWave Inc., located in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, is a spinoff company from the University of Waterloo. Dr. Zhou Wang, co-founder of SSIMWave Inc., is a global technical leader, widely known for his award-winning contributions to the field of video quality assessment, processing and compression. Dr. Wang, a Fellow of IEEE, recipient of the Primetime Emmy and E. W. R. Steacie Fellowship Awards, is one of the most frequently cited authors in the field. When it comes to automatic perceptual quality assessment of image and video, the SSIM index family of algorithms, invented by Dr. Wang and colleagues in a seminal paper published in 2004, are by far the most cited work in academia as well as the most widely used method in industry.

In the past decade, the SSIMWave team has made many new breakthroughs in video QoE measurement and optimization in terms of accuracy, speed, applicability and flexibility.

The development of leading technologies for video quality monitoring, video quality diagnosis, and perceptual video compression has led to state-of-the-art products for media, communication and entertainment industry. Zhou Wang

Co-Founder, Chairman & Chief Scientist

Zhou Wang is a co-founder, Chief Scientist at SSIMWave Inc., and a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He is a global engineering technical leader, internationally known for his award-winning contributions to the field of video quality assessment, processing and compression. The SSIM index family of algorithms, invented by Dr. Wang and published in a seminal paper in 2004, are by far the most cited work in academia. In January 2014, he was elected to a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his contributions to perceptual image processing and quality assessment. In February 2014, he received the prestigious Steacie Memorial Fellowship Award from the Governor General of Canada. In October 2015, he received an Engineering Emmy Award given by Television Academy. In November 2015, he became a member of Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

Abdul Rehman

Dr. Abdul Rehman is a co-founder, Chief Executive Officer, and President of SSIMWave, a spinoff company from the University of Waterloo, dedicated to delivering excellence in visual quality-of-experience (QoE). At SSIMWave, he is responsible for team-building, capital allocation, product development, and over-seeing marketing & sales. He leads the development of SSIMWave’s state-of-the-art video QoE measurement and perceptual video compression products geared towards the media, communication, and entertainment industry. He has more than ten years of research and development experience in the areas of image/video processing, quality assessment and compression. He has made many new breakthroughs in the field of perceptual video quality assessment by enhancing accuracy, speed, applicability and flexibility of video QoE algorithms. Prior to SSIMWave, he has worked at Blackberry, Advanced Micro Devices, Novel Mobile Radio Research, University of Waterloo, and Technical University Munich. Dr. Abdul Rehman holds a PhD degree in Information and Communication Systems from the University of Waterloo, Canada and a Master’s degree in Communications Engineering from Technical University Munich, Germany.

Kai Zeng

Dr. Kai Zeng is a co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of SSIMWave Inc., a high-tech start-up dedicated to delivering excellence in visual Quality-of-Experience (QoE). His responsibilities include product engineering, product line management and research and development (R&D) activities. Reporting directly to the CEO, he provides vision and leadership for engineering and research teams developing next generation video technology while managing the product roadmap for the company. Kai brings technology leadership and 10 years of R&D experience to SSIMWave. Prior to SSIMWave, he served as a Researcher in Advanced Technology Department of Blackberry, a telecommunication and wireless equipment company. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada, and has a strong record of publications and patents relating to digital video.
